The First Toga Parties
Livy, the great Roman historian, wrote about them with disdain: "From the time ... men intermixed with women ... there was nothing wicked [that] had not been practiced among them." He was referring to the Bacchanalia, Roman religious festivals honoring the wine god, Bacchus. At first they were secret, open only to women, and held just three times a year. But then men were admitted and--what do you know--the celebrations became as frequent as five times a month. In 186 B.C., their reputation as drunken orgies led the Roman Senate to prohibit them throughout the land. (Source unknown)
